Honey Tea

12/20/2020

A jar of honey tea, which is Mae’s favorite drink! It’s technically not tea, and it’s technically not honey, either, that’s just what it’s called! It doesn’t come from tea leaves, and instead of soaking a tea bag, some of the powder is simply scooped out and dissolved in hot water. It’s not made of honey, but it is very sweet like it.

Mae’s Needle

12/20/2020

Mae’s needle, aka her weapon! When she first returned to her kingdom after meeting the Kitsuga she started training with Noble, and he took the needle and had it forged into a blade. Her name is engraved in it and the loop is ridged for better grip.

Mae’s Dress

12/14/2020

I tried making a manga page for class! Manga is my favorite kind of comic, and my final graphic novel will be in that style. I’m still learning how to make it using screen tones since I’m new to all these digital tools. It’s still not where I want it to be but I do think I learned a lot while making this! This page is based off of some panels from the latest chapter of my comic from the panel dumps.

Timeline for Mae and the Kingdoms of Seasons

12/06/2020

Concept art of organizing the series of events.

I made a simple timeline for my universe!

The past era is when Ruben and Asha were alive, and when the kingdom was open and seiki would travel around the forest. This era ends when Ruben dies and the kingdom closes off.

The current era is when the main story takes place! Ruben is back as a cockroach, the plague attacks all for kingdoms, and Mae is sent out on her journey.

The new era begins at the end of the main story when the seiki open their kingdom again! The post-story and everything beyond takes place in this new era.

Flower Connotations

12/05/2020

Concept art for the different meanings flowers have to Seiki.

I believe I’ve talked a bit about this before, but flowers are very important to the Seiki! Flower vending is a somewhat common and important occupation for them, since giving flowers is special to them. Giving certain flowers is how they propose marriage, as well as celebrating other things (of course, they also buy flowers if they just think they’re pretty). Flower venders in richer areas can breed flowers to get rarer colors and sell them at a much higher price. Usually only higher-class Seiki can afford these, and proposing with a rare colored flower would be the equivalent of proposing with an expensive ring. Over an incredibly long time, Seiki have bred their flowers to be smaller and are able to grow them within their kingdom.

Dolly’s Kids Updated Ref

12/05/2020

Further concept art for Dolly and Anthony’s kids.

I made an updated, more detailed ref for Dolly’s kids! They aren’t big characters by any means but I’ve been drawing them more recently in my own time, so I thought it’d be helpful to finally cement their designs and personalities. They’re just babies in the main story, but in the post-story they’re 2 years old and have little outfits Dolly made for them…

About Dolly

11/28/2020

Concept art of Dolly.

Some more about Dolly and her background:

Dolly is the oldest of five daughters in a rich family. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have the best parents. Her mother is very attention seeking, and clearly only married her father for his wealth. Both of their parents are almost never around; her father is either off working or in his study, or her mother is off who knows where, usually with other guys. This meant that she and her sisters were left to run wild growing up, and instead of actual parenting, they’d just give them an allowance and let them do what they want.

Their mother constantly feeds her daughters terrible advice about boys, telling them that their biggest achievement should be marrying somebody rich, or that they should be submissive and not work for themselves. This thinking has gotten her daughters into bad situations before, and it never sat right with Dolly. Since middle school she’d go through many boyfriends, but would inevitably dump them once they tried to take advantage of her, which would happen often. Trying to follow her mother’s advice got her into relationships she wasn’t happy with, and it took finally moving out and getting away from her mom to start to express herself the way she wants to. Dolly’s mother favors her over her sisters since she looks the most like her, which makes her sisters, especially Cindell, the second oldest, start to hate her. She’d often make a point of saying she’s more beautiful than her sisters, or actually take time to chat with he briefly, which always made Dolly feel uncomfortable. Her sisters hated it because their mother was almost never around, but when she was she only seemed to pay attention to Dolly. The five of them used to share a room, but eventually they forced Dolly out to get her own room because the hostility between them was so high. Dolly’s father wasn’t the best, either. He never pays attention to his daughters or his wife, and never bothers to check where they’re going or what they’re up to. Dolly and her sisters would sometimes act out just to try and get their parents’ attention, but they were just briefly acknowledged and never punished.

Dolly is a seamstress! Her pink dress was the first real dress she made in high school, and she’s been wearing it ever since. Her dream is to open a boutique, but she wouldn’t do it because of how her mother taught her that having a job can be intimidating to men. After being in a healthy relationship with Anthony for a long time, she had finally shaken off that ideology and opened her boutique.

Younger Designs

11/28/2020

Concept art for younger versions of Mae, Dolly, Noble, and Anthony.

I finally made an actual reference sheet for myself for the designs of character when they’re younger, before I was just going off of memory.

Before Joel gave Mae her signature purple scarf, she had a long white and blue scarf she’s been wearing since she first started school. Mae is really attached to it, and she tends to stroke it when she gets anxious (the fact that she started wearing Joel’s scarf instead of this one means that she really appreciated him…).

Dolly made her signature pink dress herself when she got into high school, but before that she wore the pink and green dress her mom bought her.

When Noble was little his parents quickly found out that certain fabrics would irritate him, so they settled with dressing him in a loose nightgown.

Mae’s Biological Family

11/27/2020

Concept art for Mae’s biological family, including Lisa, Tate, Ollie, Finn, Fox, and Cecil.

Here’s Mae’s biological family! Mae has two moms, so she was adopted. Same-sex couples adopting is a very controversial topic for the seiki, so Beverly and Diana were rejected many, many times, and their neighborhood started to be nasty to them about it. Tate and Lisa heard about them, and having just had a nest of seven eggs, decided to let them adopt one of their eggs. Tate and Lisa are the kind of people that would enthusiastically volunteer to help out with their community and are always kind to their neighbors; just great people over all! They felt that since they were blessed with seven eggs (which is a rather large nest), they should help another couple become parents, too. As an egg, Mae was raised with the rest of the nest, since the eggs need to stay together in order to hatch. There was a red cloth under her to signify that this was the egg they were giving away. Beverly and Diana would routinely visit Tate and Lisa and their nest, to be present the most they could in raising the nest. Beverly chose the name “Mae” if it hatched to be a girl, and Diana chose “Jaiden” if it ended up a boy. In the end, Mae hatched being the youngest of the five, and the only girl. The two couples decided that it would be best to completely part ways from that point, raising their kids in separate schools and neighborhoods.

Lisa is Asha’s great granddaughter. She received Asha’s letter, which has been passed down to the youngest daughter in each generation. Nobody really payed attention to the letter, since after Asha’s death Thatcher taught his kids that she was crazy and shouldn’t be payed attention to. Lisa gave Beverly and Diana the letter since Mae was the youngest and only daughter in their nest. and was also eager to get rid of the tradition.
